Gatwick: Busiest Christmas Day Expected

Gatwick Airport is expecting its busiest ever Christmas Day.

This Christmas is expected to top off a fantastic year for Gatwick Airport in terms of passenger numbers.

The airport, which has experienced almost three years of consecutive monthly growth, is expecting Christmas Day passenger numbers to be 48% higher than Christmas Day 2014.

Long-haul flights occupy five of the top ten most popular Christmas Day destinations, with flights to Dubai coming out at the number one destination.

The top ten destinations from Gatwick this Christmas, based on passenger numbers are:

  1. Dubai
  2. Madrid
  3. Orlando
  4. Istanbul
  5. Bridgetown
  6. Barcelona
  7. Montego Bay
  8. Las Vegas
  9. Tenerife
  10. Goa.

A major reason for the increase in passenger numbers on Christmas Day appears to be cost, with travellers making savings of anywhere between 28 and 66% on flight prices compared with flights taken at other times over the Christmas period.

Overall, the airport is expecting to handle 9% more passengers over the Christmas period than the same period last year.
