As Christmas draws closer – and the shops are bursting with more festive delights by the minute– there’s no better time to consider your options for spending Christmas abroad.

Whether you’re after traditional snow and roaring fires or a complete break with tradition, it’s all here:
How about spending Christmas closer to home and heading to Edinburgh? Edinburgh’s festive season is marked with a spectacular firework display at Edinburgh Castle – what could be more festive than being wrapped up, drinking mulled wine and eating roast chestnuts? The shopping in Edinburgh is fantastic too so you could even treat yourself to something special.
Forget a roast turkey dinner in Boston, instead you’ll find roasted lobster on the Christmas Day menu. Perhaps not keeping with tradition, as we know it, but the snow that covers the city will more than make up for that. Boston is a beautiful city made up of stunning architecture, so sightseeing is a must. And in true American style, the lights and decorations are incredible.
Quebec is a winter wonderland at Christmas time and will have everyone feeling festive. It’s a city that looks like a Christmas card with its snow-covered streets and illuminated trees. What’s more, the city offers countless winter sports such as hiking, snowmobiling and snowshoeing.
Shop until you drop in Munich’s Christmas markets, which line the streets. Add to that the churches with their bells and it’s a truly festive atmosphere. Fancy skiing to break up your holiday – the Alps aren’t far away either.
Santa Cruz, USA
If you fancy fun in the sun then Santa Cruz is for you. Although there’s no snow or traditional Christmas card scenery here, you will find plenty of good old-fashioned Christmas cheer – and on many beaches Father Christmas will come heading in on a surfboard!
Christmas Island, Australia
How about spending Christmas eating freshly caught crab, fish and lobster in the scorching sunshine on Australia’s Christmas Island? Days can be spent diving, fishing and relaxing on golden beaches - true fun in the festive sun.
Residents of Hong Kong celebrate with a great party called ‘Winterfest’ which runs from late November to early January. It includes a forest of 200 Christmas trees and an ice-skating rink. Alternatively, if your idea of Christmas is shopping til you drop then die-hard shoppers will love the festive season in Hong Kong. Here, the shops are even open on Christmas Day.
Forget your Christmas jumper, in Sydney you’ll need your swimming shorts. Join in with carol singing on the famous Bondi Beach and enjoy a BBQ lunch rather than your traditional roast!
