Airport Foreign Exchange

Did you know that if you leave buying your foreign exchange until you get to the airport you’ll get less for your money?

A recent survey by The Post Office revealed that rates and charges made by airport Bureau de Change outlets aren’t as favourable as those offered online or on the High Street.

The survey revealed that, last year, 1.6 million passengers left buying their foreign currency until they were at the airport. Two thirds of these passengers were travelling to Europe, so therefore bought Euros.

Based on the findings of the survey, these passengers – more than one million people – were each charged more than £12 extra than if they’d bought their Euros before they travelled. What’s more, the number of people leaving their currency purchases until the last minute is increasing – 15% more last year than the previous year.

As with foreign currency, there are many things that are worth buying in advance of your travel – either for better cover or at cheaper prices. Take for example, meet and greet airport parking - book onlline, in advance for the best possible deals.

Travel Insurance has benefits if purchased in advance too, while the cost will be the same, your cover starts from the moment it’s taken out – so you’ll be covered for any cancellations that occur, or if your travel operator/airline goes bust (subject to terms of the policy) etc.
