5 of the world's most unusual hotels

If you’re tired of self-catering holidays, bored with high-rise hotels or apartments and looking for holiday accommodation with a difference, check out our selection of unusual hotels:

  1. Australia: Daintree Eco Lodge & Spa
Hidden away in Australia's little known world heritage site rainforest is the Daintree Eco Lodge & Spa. Situated in a tropical, living rainforest - it's the world's oldest at around 135 million years old - this stunning hotel offers a choice of 15 tree top villas that provide all the comfort and luxury of a boutique hotel.

  2. Sweden: ice-hotel in Jukkasjarvi
Whilst it's probably one of the most famous WOW hotels of the world, it's still worth a mention. Sweden's ice-hotel in Jukkasjarvi is the world's largest ice hotel and has been established for 22 years, originating from a mere igloo! As you'd expect, visitors can only stay here from December until April, which coincides nicely with the amazing Northern Lights.

  3. Belgium: La Balade des Gnomes in Durby
If you're more in the mood for a fairytale then check out a stay in a Trojan Horse suite, which is part of the La Balade des Gnomes in Durby, Belgium. The rooms are the brainchild of the owner who is also an architect. He's created an amazing choice of fairytale inspired rooms, as a well as a room that is actually a boat that bobs gently in a swimming pool!

  4. Germany: Baumhaus Hotel
Germany boasts some child-friendly tree houses. Believed to be the first tree house hotel in Eastern German is the Baumhaus Hotel. Surrounded by an adventure park, the rooms are inspired by folk and fairy tale, mixed up with weird and wonderful decoration and all without a straight line in site! Even the beds are somewhat topsy-turvy but guarantee a good night's sleep, plus all the comforts and amenities of any good hotel. With just 5 tree houses on offer book quick.

  5. USA, Florida: Jules' Undersea Lodge
Now this hotel is very unusual, it's an underwater haven. Jules' Undersea Lodge is in the heart of Key Largo in the sunshine state of Florida. To arrive, guests will need to scuba dive through the Emerald lagoon. The hotel used to be a research laboratory but now offers water-loving holidaymakers a comfortable stay, which includes a stocked kitchen, hot showers, a choice of music and books.
