7 tips to help you sleep when flying

Do you find yourself struggling to get some sleep while flying? It's hardly surprising that sleeping on a plane is difficult given the differences between an airplane seat and your comfortable bed!

If you're off on holiday and the thought of spending several hours on a plane without any sleep fills you with dread then check out our top tips for sleeping whilst travelling:

  1. Clothing
Make sure you are wearing comfortable clothes when travelling. Go for loose clothing – nothing tight. Choose breathable fabrics such as cotton rather than polyester and remember that flights can usually be quite warm so think about layering up. If you get too hot you can easily take off a layer to make yourself more comfortable.

  2. Blankets
Ask one of the cabin crew for a blanket. Blankets are usually offered on most night flights but if you want to be sure check before you fly. If the airline you are flying with doesn't give out complimentary blankets, try taking a thin blanket in your hand luggage.

  3. Pillows
If you need a pillow to get to sleep invest in a travel pillow. Travel pillows are available in all sorts of shapes and sizes and many passengers find them a real help. Alternatively, wear a thick jumper and once ready for a sleep take it off, roll it up and use it as a pillow.

  4. Books
If you normally wouldn't consider going to sleep until you've read a chapter or two of your book don't let your flight be any different. Be sure to pack your book in your hand luggage.

  5. Music
If you can't relax and fall asleep without the aid of music, load up your MP3 or iPod with a selection of relaxing music for use on the plane.

  6. Avoid Caffeine
Avoid caffeinated drinks before your flight. If you're taking an evening flight, try to avoid tea and coffee from midday. Don't forget that many fizzy drinks contain caffeine too.

  7. Watch What You Eat
Don't eat too much before getting on your flight as trying to get a good night's sleep is difficult enough on a full stomach and much harder on an airplane.

Happy holidays and sweet dreams, just don't forget to book your Gatwick meet and greet parking.
