Conquer Your Fear of Flying |
Whilst most of us look forward to "leaving on a jet plane", for many the thought of getting on a plane and flying is a real fear.

As most passengers board the plane with excitement, filled with thoughts of the exciting final destination, whether that's sandy beaches or cultural cities, for many passengers the only feeling they are faced with is utter fear!
The fear of flying is awful. It can start weeks before the holiday begins. And in extreme cases, it can mean families holidaying apart.
What's more, it's not as rare as one might think. Did you know that one in six adults has a fear of flying?
We've all heard the saying that flying is the safest form of transport. The thing is it's true! Well, second actually; if you count that the actual safest form of transport is an escalator or a lift!
So, if you are one of those scared, fretful or frightened flyers, take a moment to read through these proven practical and emotional fear of flying tips. And fingers crossed it might make you feel a little better about the thought of your next trip.
Know your Facts and Figures
It's true – get to know the facts and figures of flying. Yes, it is the safest form of transport. Three million people a day fly through our skies. What's more the statistics of you being involved in a plane crash are actually 1 in 11 million!
Get to the Airport Early
Your stress levels will only increase if you are rushing to check-in, worried that you'll be late. Leave yourself plenty of time to check-in and pass through security with time to spare. It will help you feel more relaxed. Don't think that by leaving it late you'll be spending less time at the airport so less time to worry – it will mean the exact opposite!
Try to Relax Before Your Flight
Do try to relax before your flight. Get a bite to eat in one of the many restaurants, or treat yourself to some shopping in the duty free shops. Look at the books and magazines in the newsagents – all of this is occupying your time, rather than dwelling and worrying about your impending flight.
Sit at the Front of the Plane
When you book your holiday or flight see if you can book your seat. It's a proven fact that those suffering with a fear of flying feel better when sitting at the front of the aircraft.
In-flight Entertainment
Whether your flight is short haul or long haul you'll need a distraction. Get yourself an iPod or MP3 player loaded with some of your favourite music. Also put some calming music on, classical music helps many passengers relax. And why not load some of your favourite TV shows or movies onto your iPod too, which adds to the choice offered by the in-flight TV channels. Books and crosswords in your hand luggage can also help.
Drink Plenty
Keeping hydrated on a flight is very important. Take on with you some bottled water. Do however avoid caffeine. Caffeine will only raise your anxiety levels. Also, avoid alcohol.
Turbulence
Turbulence can be unnerving, however, it very rarely causes an aircraft a problem, and even less likely to cause injury to passengers. It's actually the fact that passengers are not wearing their seat belts during turbulence that causes any injuries, or unsecure luggage. In the event of turbulence, remain seated and try to sway with the movement of the plane. Try not to tense your body up.
Contact Your Doctor
Go and talk to your GP if your fear of flying is just too much to bear. They should be able to recommend some breathing techniques and relaxation exercises for you. In severe cases, sometimes mild medication can be prescribed.
Don't Worry, be Happy!
Chances are that once you reach your destination you'll be able to enjoy a fabulous holiday with family and friends. So focus on just that! It's not often we manage to escape our busy lives to spend a week or two relaxing. So try and immerse yourself in happy thoughts, rather than the fact that right now you're sat on a plane. |
