Packing your suitcase. |
You’re off on holiday. All you have left to do is pack your bags. Easy…or is it? |
| Use this luggage check list for helpful tips on packing your bags. Avoid any embarrassment that your bags are too heavy and refused onto the aircraft, you’ve packed something you shouldn’t, or that something vital is missing from your hand luggage! |

It ain’t heavy, it’s my suitcase… |
Whilst you may be tempted to pack the entire contents of your home – just in case– DON’T! Each suitcase that you board onto the aircraft cannot weigh more than 32kgs, that’s 70lbs (NB - this is a general rule so check with your Airline ((often printed on your flight ticket)) to double check as weights can occasionally vary).
A good way to check the weight of your case is first of all weigh yourself on some scales. Then, get back on the scales holding your suitcase – deduct your weight from the new total to work out how much your case weighs.
This simple check will eliminate any embarrassing moments at check-in when your cases are refused boarding as they are too heavy – that means either unpacking and discarding some of the contents, or repacking your bags into a number of smaller ones and paying a hefty fine for the additional weight you are carrying!
If you have no option but to take extra luggage and therefore will exceed your baggage weight allowance contact your Airline in advance. This will avoid any unnecessary delays, embarrassment and aid swift check-in for you and your family. |

Heavy Hand Luggage |
| Also consider your hand luggage allowances too. Bags must be of a similar size to a regular rucksack. If you are unsure check with your Airline and also enquire as to any individual weight restrictions that might apply. For help and information on what you can and can’t include in your hand luggage visit the Travel Tips section of this Airport Information site. |

Luggage Check-In |
When you arrive at check-in you and your party will be asked a series of compulsory security questions by the Ground Hostess – these questions are dictated by the British Government. With the UK on a heightened security alert these questions now take longer, as do all security airport checks, so do be prepared for additional delays.
Particularly in busy peak periods so arrive in good time. An example of what you might be asked are things like – did you pack the luggage yourself? Has anyone added anything to your luggage?
Have you left your luggage unattended? Does your luggage contain any prohibited or restricted items (they will elaborate)? For a detailed listing on those items that are prohibited and restricted visit the security section of this Airport Information site. |
